I Do! I Do! | Light Opera Works Second Stage | Theater & Performance | Chicago Reader

I Do! I Do! The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through Nov. 14 2010

Based on Jan de Hartog's play, The Fourposter, this 1966 two-character musical by Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt follows a couple through several decades of marriage, from newlywed infatuation through middle-age disenchantment (don't worry, it's nothing serious) to empty-nester satisfaction. And never once, in all that time, do they buy a new bed. Interior design enthusiasts and those seeking a fresh assessment of matrimony should look elsewhere. Still, it's pleasant enough stuff in Rudy Hogenmiller's competent production for Light Opera Works. As the couple, Larry Adams and Catherine Lord are initially so sugary sweet that they may pose a danger to diabetics in the audience. But, like their characters, they age nicely. --Zac Thompson

Price: $13.50-$42
