If Scrooge Was a Brother The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through Dec. 29 2013

There must be some new spin to put on A Christmas Carol. But playwright Ekundayo Bandele's rendering of Scrooge as a black slumlord isn't it—the 1979 Broadway musical Comin' Uptown used the same twist. A tangle of missed cues plagued the opening night of this production from ETA Creative Arts, but with Halloween just gone, director Kemati J. Porter has a few months to iron out the kinks. Though the acting's uneven, Porter's cast sing well on the unaccompanied carols throughout the script. The biggest surprise is how little the story needs changing. Bandele's concept, even if it isn't original, brings Dickens's 19th-century social indictments stingingly close to home. —Keith Griffith
