Imaginary Friends and Friends New Review (Theater and Comedy) The Short List (Theater)

When: Fridays. Continues through Jan. 30 2009

Imaginary Friends earned this run by winning the Cornservatory's Improv Gladiators competition last fall. They share each evening with a guest opener and the regular second act, Butter, so the show is a triple bill of long-form improv with intergroup short-form games mixed in. Like Butter, Imaginary Friends is a large ensemble with a few loose cannons whose imaginative risk taking tends to get bobbled or ignored by the others. Characters and settings usually aren't well defined, bits stall after the first decent laugh line is located, and too few players show a willingness to lead. But when they're focused, their enthusiasm can result in occasional explosions of funny nonsense. Guest openers: Trying 2 Hard (1/30). --Ryan Hubbard
