Impaled, Phobia, Kill the Client, Illogicist, Maruta Recommended Soundboard

When: Sat., Sept. 13, 8 p.m. 2008

In an age when metal bands are refining ambitious avant-garde aesthetics and cultivating crossover appeal, sometimes it’s good to indulge your inner troglodyte and—to borrow a phrase from Stephen King—go for the gross-out. Let me suggest Oakland’s Impaled, a death-metal band of the old school (that is, a school with a curriculum based on the Faces of Death videos). The Last Gasp (Willowtip), the band’s fourth full-length, sounds like a wood chipper pulping corpses, and the barely decipherable lyrics read like a forensic pathologist’s report on a suicide bomber. Impaled’s churning grind is sincerely terrifying, but it’s hard to be too intimidated by guys who post a list of ways to celebrate their album release that includes “When someone scores in soccer, scream GORE!!!” —Monica Kendrick
