Improv Nerd With Jimmy Carrane Recommended The Short List (Theater)

When: Fridays. Continues through April 6 2012

After 25 years as a comedic performer and instructor, you'd think Jimmy Carrane would have nerves of steel. Instead, while preparing for a two-person scene with Annoyance Theatre founder Mick Napier, the host and improv veteran makes a humble confession: he's nervous. Visibly so. That's not to his discredit—as Napier put it earlier in the evening, improvisation is "the art of being OK with not knowing what the fuck you're doing." Carrane's fascinating, weekly no-frills interview platform is full of similar behind-the-scenes tidbits, humorous anecdotes, and insight into performers' processes. Though the format is tailored mostly to comedy students, outsiders won't feel excluded. Fans of Marc Maron's WTF podcast would especially do well to take advantage of Chicago's own insider showcase. —Dan Jakes
