Improvised Jane Austen | Stage 773 | Improv/Sketch | Chicago Reader

Improvised Jane Austen

When: Thursdays. Continues through Oct. 27 2011

Without a doubt, the all-female cast of this show have done their homework. They know the source material well enough to improvise Austen-esque narratives replete with parsons, servant girls, gentlemen, ladies, and horses gallivanting about villages with names like Winchestershire and Southportshire. The timbre, cadence, and vocabulary of their speech are spot-on. But the show is at its best when it goes beyond the erudite shtick of funny accents and expressions like "she is aged four and twenty" to explore class and gender relationships. The humor develops into something richer and more complex, with entertainment potential even for those of us possessing only a passing knowledge of Austen's works. —Brian Costello
