Improvised Simpsons Member Picks The Short List (Theater)

When: Saturdays. Continues through Jan. 30 2010

There are some spot-on vocal impersonations in this 30-minute, ad-libbed take-off on The Simpsons: an emphatically nerdy Milhouse, a seductively emphysemic Aunt Patty, several raspily repugnant C.M. Burnses. And when the five performers put their skills on rapid-fire display in the first few minutes of the show, taking turns answering an introductory question supplied by the audience ("Where did you grow up?" on opening night), it looks like we're in for a humdinger of an evening. But then it comes time to set their characters in motion, and they're largely at a loss. Too often actors jump into scenes without practical tasks for their characters, then wait for ideas that no one supplies. --Justin Hayford
