In the City of Sylvia

A hypnotic and haunting feature by Spanish experimental filmmaker Jose Luis Guerin, with reference points to W.G. Sebald's novel Vertigo and Alfred Hitchcock's film of the same title. An artist returns to Strasbourg after a literary pilgrimage, where he's driven to search for a young woman briefly sighted in a street-side cafe. A mysterious, beautiful, and primal work, telling its elliptical story with color, carefully articulated sound, and minimal dialogue. In French with subtitles. 84 min.
