In the Heights The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Tuesdays-Sundays. Continues through Jan. 15 2012

A multiple Tony Award winner in 2008, In the Heights is packed with eye-pleasing dances and ear-pleasing tunes. The former, choreographed for Broadway by Andy Blankenbuehler, combine salsa, hip-hop, and other street dances with more traditional moves; the latter, composed by Lin-Manuel Miranda, mirror the diversity of the Brooklyn neighborhood the musical memorializes, offering tastes of rap, R&B, and Latin pop and jazz. It's all powered, in this touring production, by a nine-member band to die for. What's missing is a real story to tell. We never get to know the characters because Quiara Alegria Hudes's book fails to find the drama and humor in their lives. And it doesn't help that everyone is made out to be Sesame Street nice. —Jack Helbig
