Incendiary The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through June 3 2012

A serial arsonist who also happens to be a New York City fire chief falls for the hardboiled detective investigating her crimes. Meanwhile, the arsonist's pushover therapist gets tangled up in hugger-muggery having to do with corporate espionage. Playwright Adam Szymkowicz strains to connect these two story lines in this half-baked noir, which is divided into very short scenes that never really go anywhere or build to anything. Director Katie Jones treats Szymkowicz's script as a zany comedy, letting her Wishbone Theatre Collective cast ham it up without restraint. Maybe their nonstop overplaying is an attempt to make themselves visible in spite of Holly McCauley's remarkably poor lighting design—basically a small pool of light that moves halfheartedly around the stage, only occasionally illuminating the action. —Zac Thompson
