Indigo Trio, John Corbett vs. Josh Abrams (DJ sets) Recommended Soundboard

When: Wed., Jan. 7, 9:30 p.m. 2009

Flutist Nicole Mitchell has written and staged ambitious suites dedicated to Alice Coltrane and Octavia Butler and crafted elaborate arrangements for her Black Earth Ensemble, but though she solos plenty in those contexts, she rarely takes center stage and lets her brilliance as an improviser flower. So gigs by the Indigo Trio (which are becoming increasingly rare) are welcome chances to really get an earful of Mitchell—she shares the stage only with the powerhouse rhythm section of Harrison Bankhead (bass) and Hamid Drake (drums). Recorded in 2005 and released in ’07, their one album, Live in Montreal (Greenleaf), captures their fierce rigor and grace—most of the music was improvised on the fly, but it’s articulated with a cogency that sounds like the product of hours of rehearsal. The group plays two sets; John Corbett and Josh Abrams spin. —Peter Margasak
