Of the work available for preview, my favorites are four 2004 sketchlike video abstractions from Kirby's “Latent Light Excavations” series. Their shifting fuzzy colors, geometrical shapes, and more organic marks give them a rare modesty and delicacy—these are fragments of fleeting beauty snatched from the rush of the world. Other videos present the same theme in a more narrative form: Study in Choreography for Camera Remote (2002) offers not the formal dancing of the similarly titled 1945 Maya Deren film but the “domestic dance” of household work—sweeping seen from floor level, a child playing, silhouetted bare feet. 100 min.
