If the arrival of Scoop last year and the Marc Jacobs store planned for Bucktown don't prove that major retailers and designers are finally taking Chicago seriously, the opening of not one but two Intermix locations this spring should do the trick. The New York-based chain carries garments from both the high and low ends of the fashion spectrum, organizing them not by brand but by what goes with what (the blousy tops are with the skinny jeans, for instance). The Lincoln Park store is supposed to open at the end of May, but at the Gold Coast location the serpentine racks are already stuffed with dresses, from a filmy metallic tent design with puff sleeves by Stella McCartney ($1,530) to a brown T-shirt number by Daftbird ($90). A narrow canary-hued patent leather belt by Streets Ahead ($85) might be just the thing for someone looking to add a touch of yellow, the color du jour. Other eye-catching inventory: a gorgeous deep red silk scoop-neck blouse by Geren Ford ($253), a camouflage-print belted trench ($998) and matching bubble miniskirt ($295) from R.E.D. Valentino, and a couple interesting ankle boot/sandal hybrids in brown or black leather by Chloe ($618-$650). Right now the selections are all very New York; it'll be interesting to see if that changes.
