Iron Monkey

At night a masked vigilante punishes the corrupt and protects the innocent in a province in eastern China, where by day he's a doctor at a humanitarian clinic. He's only one of several understated superheroes in this lushly toned 1993 martial arts comedy set in the 19th century and directed by renowned action choreographer Yuen Wo-ping. Also revealing unexpected skill at the art of combat are two travelers—a young boy and his father—and the doctor's assistant, Miss Orchid, who has a mysterious past. All are formidable adversaries—sometimes of one another—in scenes of ingenious slapstick violence. Tsui Hark contributed to the script. In Cantonese with subtitles. 85 min.
