When: Mondays, Fridays-Sundays. Continues through Feb. 11 2012

On the night before her wedding, a young Victorian Englishwoman called Little Cog dredges up—and occasionally revises—the past by playing riddling games and acting out stories with her mother, Martha, a flinty widow who runs her late husband's iron mill. Despite its stylization and restraint, April De Angelis's 1989 verse play bristles with indignation at the dearth of choices available to 19th-century women. The sense of constriction is reinforced in Karen Yates's Oracle Productions staging by Michael Mroch's steel cage of a set and the harness-like leather corsets in Darcy Hofer's costume design. The script gets portentous and heavy-handed, but Katherine Keberlein as Martha and Sarah Goeden as Little Cog deftly convey a longing for freedom. —Zac Thompson
