Irving Berlin's White Christmas The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Mondays-Sundays. Continues through Jan. 2 2011

Yes, Michael Curtiz's 1954 movie musical was silly, sentimental, and contrived. But it had four crucial things this touring stage version doesn't: Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney, and Vera-Ellen. With blandly competent journeymen attempting to fill those stars' enormous tap shoes, the tale of stage folk finding love in Vermont is nothing but a silly, sentimental contrivance. Even Irving Berlin standards like "I Love a Piano" and "Love, You Didn't Do Right by Me" come off poorly here, demonstrating that Berlin could be as much a cobbler as a composer. The overwhelming tedium is compounded by annoyance at the tinny, too-loud miking. --Tony Adler
