To the editors:

I am writing to congratulate you on your courage in publishing Jason Berry's article about pedophilia ["The Sins of the Fathers," May 24]. It was very well written and I'm sure very well edited. Someone has at last resisted the Archdiocese's attempt to intimidate the local media, thank heaven.

Incidentally, if you will permit me to put on my sociologist hat for a minute, the estimate of 52 million Catholics in the country is almost certainly too low. A recent publicized study about religious affiliation argues that Catholics are 26 percent of the country. Our research here at NORC through the years always turn up 25 percent Catholic. It seems very likely to me that both sets of surveys miss a fair number of Hispanic Catholics. Therefore, the Catholic population is certainly in excess of 60 million and perhaps somewhat closer to 65 million.
