It's a Wonderful Life: The Radio Play The Short List (Theater) Recommended Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Dec. 26 2010

Now in its ninth iteration, this annual staging of the screenplay from Frank Capra's iconic 1946 movie deserves a place in the firmament of Chicago holiday traditions. Tom Burch's set re-creates a 1940s radio station, complete with vintage mikes, "On Air" and "Applause" lights, and a space for foley operator Rick Kubes to clomp shoes and shatter panes of glass with the swift competence of a sleight-of-hand artist. Christopher McLinden captures the earnest cynicism of the original subprime lender, George Bailey, without the aw-shucks shtick Jimmy Stewart brought to the role in the movie. Mary Winn Heider plays love interest Mary Hatch with winning charm, and Alan Wilder slips adroitly between the old miser, Potter, and the childlike angel, Clarence. --Keith Griffith
