It's Christmas, Goddamnit! | Annoyance Theatre | Theater & Performance | Chicago Reader

It's Christmas, Goddamnit! Member Picks The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Saturdays. Continues through Dec. 27 2014

There's nary a holiday story that doesn't include some sort of family dysfunction, and the Annoyance's It's Christmas, Goddamnit! is no exception. Here each Christmas Eve guest has a cartoonish flaw, from the spinster sister and manchild brother to the over-the-top marrieds spouting psychobabble. While the performers' dedication to the overblown archetypes can be good for a few laughs, the characters' inauthenticity is off-putting. And a few laughs was all I got out of it, finding myself more often close to tears during genuinely devastating moments that are quickly sidelined in favor of an obnoxious outburst. For an awkward display of holiday cheer, I'll stick to my own family's gatherings. —Brianna Wellen
