When: Sun., Dec. 14, 8:30 p.m. 2014

In Italian, Ensemble Dal Niente’s name means “from nothing”; the preferred release format of local label Parlour Tapes—the audio cassette—practically guarantees sales figures next to nothing. But there will be nothing insubstantial about this concert, which is being jointly presented by two of Chicago’s least hidebound proponents of new music. “Diligence Is to Magic as Progress Is to Flight” is an ongoing series collaboration between the ensemble’s violinist, J. Austin Wulliman, and composer/instrumentalist Katherine Young. Young has devised planned improvisations, notated scores, and video projections that showcase Wulliman’s virtuosic facility with coarse textures, ringing harmonics, and discontinuous progressions. Over the course of tonight’s program Wulliman will play solo—against Young’s electronics and detuned electric guitar—and with a larger chamber ensemble. This performance celebrates the release of the piece as both a single cassette, which will be distributed free to concertgoers, and a limited edition four-tape boxed set that can be used to turn any room with enough tape decks into a multichannel sound installation. —Bill Meyer
