Jablonski | iO Theater | Improv/Sketch | Chicago Reader

When: Thursdays. Continues through May 6 2010

The two members of Jablonski!, Sherra Lasley and John Sviokla, pour a lot of themselves into this sketch revue. The duo deliver monologues as people from their own lives. Their insecurities manifest in sketches about couples who fear "nesting." They even use their stomachs and butts as props. Together with material that plays on surprise (a registered sex offender discovers he lives next to his ex), those intimate gags suit Jablonski! best. It's the stuff that's more removed from their experience and yet not weird enough to shock--about a 50/50 split with the rest--that misses the mark. Scenes about unwilling hitchhikers and helicopter pilots diffuse the show. Lasley and Sviokla are talented, affable comics, but their revue's core is only sometimes apparent in the writing. --Steve Heisler
