Tom Cruise is the title character, a reclusive former military officer who comes out of hiding to help investigate a mysterious mass shooting. Adapted from a series of paperback thrillers by UK writer Lee Childs, this never transcends its mass-market origins; writer-director Christopher McQuarrie (The Way of the Gun) fails to provide any interesting subtext to the generic plotting, and his attempts at Chandler-esque dialogue tend to fall flat. Still, this is brisk, attention-grabbing, and generally unpretentious—basically an old noir programmer inflated to blockbuster proportions. The impressive cast includes Robert Duvall, Richard Jenkins, David Oyelowo, and, in a fun bit of stunt casting, Werner Herzog as one of the villains.
