When: Fri., Feb. 27, 9:30 p.m. 2009

During its original life span in the 90s, local duo Jack the Dog—aka vibist and percussionist Carrie Biolo, who played in some of reedist Guillermo Gregorio’s best bands of the era, and keyboardist Jeffrey Kowalkowski. I regret to say I was one of the people taking them for granted, but listening to their recordings now, I’m amazed by the casual poise with which they navigated radically different kinds of music making, from heady compositions to bristling improvisations to dadaist conceptual gambits. Biolo left Chicago in 2000, settling on Michigan’s upper peninsula, and Jack the Dog haven’t performed in a decade. At these concerts, part of the Rhinoceros Theater Festival, they’ll draw on their back catalog and premiere a new composition for piano and cross-country skier. Biolo plans to be on skis for the performance, and says her skiing will be “rhythmically incorporated.” —Peter Margasak
