Jagged Edge

Richard Marquand's dull, literal direction takes all the edge off this variant on the “Will he kiss her or kill her?” formula. Glenn Close is the no-nonsense attorney assigned to defend newspaper publisher Jeff Bridges, on trial for the violent murder of his wealthy wife. Close is convinced of his innocence, but as soon as she starts to fall in love with him, doubts begin to invade her mind. The wholesome cast completely obliterates the unstated perversities that have been this genre's reason for being since Hitchcock's Suspicion: Close is unable to suggest an iota of masochistic yearning, Bridges doesn't have a shred of the sinister charm the part requires. With Peter Coyote.
