Hours: Breakfast, lunch, dinner: seven days
DePaul cafe serving BYO dinner as well as breakfast and lunch.
Everything about this charming corner cafe aims to please—which is why breakfast is served all afternoon, with classics like pancakes and omelets and house innovations like the Italian Benedict, featuring two poached eggs on twin cheddar risotto cakes. Studded with bacon, smeared with a sweet tomato jam, and garnished with sweet, sliced cherry tomatoes, the cakes are a little gooey but otherwise delectable. A proper dinner or lunch can be had given the ample selection of burgers, sandwiches, tasty wraps, and pasta, but the entrees are the real draw. More expensive than the other dinner options, they deliver portions worth the price, and meat that's surprisingly tender and juicy. The pork tenderloin was tangy in a potent chipotle pepper sauce, and the onion rings were impeccable. The short rib, roasted in a red wine reduction, was nicely muted by the garlicky spinach and mashed potatoes, yet also matched well with the flavor of the honeyed carrots. A charismatic server gave lots of warmth to the small but not exactly cozy space, pausing among tables to joke or wield a bottle opener on a beer (it's BYO for now, and you can pick something up across the street at craft beer and wine shop Vrai Amour Wines).
