James and the Giant Peach Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Saturdays, Sundays. Continues through Aug. 25 2013

The audience milling about at the trailhead was a nicely diverse sampling of the under-five set, smartly attired in tiny baseball caps, toting sticks of string cheese and baggies of Cocoa Puffs, squinting in the frequent blasts of nontoxic bug spray. Theater-Hikes’ goal of bringing together theater people and hiker folk is ambitious and perhaps easiest to realize in productions geared toward small children: both they and the parents who want to keep them occupied seem blissfully ignorant of the fact that they could just leave. When the motley crew set out down the wooded path, all was sunshine, heat, and cicadas. And then the possibly unrehearsed production of James and the Giant Peach got under way. The actors, adults who seemed never to have encountered a child, were noticeably irritable when the children failed to know when to applaud. For their part, the tots were distinctly underwhelmed and refused, en masse, to sing along. —Marya Hornbacher
