James Murphy, LA Jesus, Mr. Joshua Early Warnings (Music) Recommended Soundboard

When: Fri., March 23, 10 p.m. 2012

A self-conscious, disco-loving thirtysomething studio rat with a blase way of filleting the tropes of hipster cool and little experience performing in front of big crowds, James Murphy was a less-than-obvious candidate for indie-rock superstardom when his band LCD Soundsystem dropped its debut single, "Losing My Edge," in 2002. But by the time the group disbanded last year following a sold-out blowout at Madison Square Garden, Murphy had undeniably attained it, with LCD's Sound of Silver and This Is Happening standing as two of the most important indie-rock records in a decade. Since then Murphy has been living up to his promise to spend his time post-LCD dicking around with relatively low-pressure projects, including a recent collaborative single, "Do Ya Thing," with Gorillaz and Andre 3000. Murphy's knowledge of dance music is encyclopedic, and his DJ set here will likely be a learning experience for music geeks—but don't forget to dance. —Miles Raymer LA Jesus, Mr. Joshua, and Kool Hersh open.
