Jarred: A Hoodoo Comedy The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Dec. 14 2008

If you don't speak Spanish--and I mean have it in your bones--whole chunks of Tanya Saracho's new play are going to fly past you. But don't let that keep you from seeing it: most of it's in English, after all, and lots of it is delightful. Besides, the heroine, Alicia, is in the same boat as you. Nominally Latina, she's got only basic Spanish, and initially knows nada about mesoamerican folklore. When her fiance drops her, though, she takes a crash course in talismans, love potions, and Aztec spells. The script could use sharpening and a conceit involving voiceovers doesn't work, but Jarred succeeds overall as a light comedy with weight. Moreover, the cast of this Teatro Luna production--Saracho included--kicks ass. --Tony Adler
