When: Wed., Dec. 31, 10 p.m. 2008

If one of your New Year’s resolutions is “Destroy that empty semicircle in front of the stage at every show I attend,” then a gig by this party-starting Chicago three-piece is a fantastic place to get warmed up. The YOLKS’ soulful take on garage trash sounds like Kennedy-era frat rock—they’re fond of performing in what looks like their finest Woodfield Mall apparel—and they’ve got the chops to make it stick. But they really bring the house down when they fire up the organ, going from blistering instrumentals like “Mob City Hustle” to slow songs that demand you grab the nearest partner and sway. If you ask me, the Yolks are already in the running to be 2009’s Champions of the Dance. —Brian Costello
