Jazz Singer James Chafin

When: Wed., Feb. 17, 9 p.m. 2010

James Chafin presents an evening of music by Charlie Parker, Radiohead, Duke Ellington, and others. James uses his rich four-octave baritone voice as an instrument, wordlessly vocalizing sinuous long lines or scatting rapid fire like a machine gun. He improvises mad stories, dreams, fragments of lyrics and poems over chord changes like a hard swinging street preacher. But he can also simply sing the words of a song with broken hearted intimacy.
