Jemaa El Fna: Morocco's Rendezvous of the Dead

Video maker Hisham Mayet spends an evening strolling through Jemma El Fna, a huge public square in Marrakech, and capturing impromptu performances by an assortment of street musicians. This low-budget documentary (2003) provides neither narration nor background information, but the vibrant sounds, recalling the trance grooves of Morocco's Gnawan music, need little context to be appreciated. Most of the music is traditional, played on native stringed instruments, but Mayet also shows an ad hoc DJ spinning old records and a flirtatious young singer hamming it up. 60 min.
