A Swiss journalist (Michel Voita) investigating the murder of legendary 17th-century freedom fighter Georg Jenatsch finds himself slipping into the past in this 1987 metaphysical mystery by Daniel Schmid. The film creates a Borgesian labyrinth in which reality and imagination become equally important to the protagonist, but its construction isn't as sophisticated: the past hardly impinges on the present except for questions about the journalist's mental state and his girlfriend's slight annoyance. Schmid's narrative style is more disciplined and less stagy than in earlier features; still, The Twilight Zone covered this sort of material with greater verve and directness. With Carole Bouquet and Laura Betti. 97 min.
