It's shocking that this one-note show, about a Jewish guy who helps his buddy masquerade as a Jew to get chicks, has been so widely produced. After several hours of quiet postshow contemplation/abject horror, I can only say that Sam Wolfson and Bryan Fogel's low-rent compendium of bad taste and racist stereotypes is a work of marketing genius. As much as I'd like to be a mensch and help fellow members of the tribe pad their wallets, everything about Jewtopia is god-awful. Imagine a Second City Training Center student expanding his homework for a scene-writing class to the length of a two-hour play, then performing the comedy as broadly as possible to mask its critical defects. Then add ghastly pacing, an overcooked presentation, and a vile undercurrent of misogyny. Jews haven't seemed this lost since Moses wandered into the Sinai Desert. Open run: Tue-Thu 7:30 PM, Fri 8 PM, Sat 5 and 8:30 PM, Sun 3 PM. Mercury Theater, 3745 N. Southport, 773-325-1700. $39.50-$54.50.
