When: Tue., March 24, 9 p.m. 2015

For those who have had the pleasure of catching lo-fi pop auteur Jimmy Whispers in the flesh these past couple of years, this record release might feel as momentous an occasion as it does to the man himself. That’s because the sick-to-your-stomach-sweet love songs of “Old Man Whispers”—a nickname he likes to sport on occasion—are finally available to take home. The collection of earnest, vigorous tracks on Summer in Pain (Moniker) can plant a flag in your brain space, and I’ve left some of Jimmy’s shows with the intoxicating, wistful hum of “Heart Don’t Know” looping in my head (I still sing fragments of it to myself). Jimmy recorded the songs on the fly, playing a multi-keyboard electric organ and belting out his lyrics, and he performs with the heart and intensity of someone who desperately needs to unleash what’s been building up inside of him. In concert Jimmy is unhinged and unpredictable, and he’s not afraid to get in the faces of the showgoers so that they can embrace his music. For tonight’s show Jimmy’s going to collaborate with some of the openers: he’ll perform one of his tracks with Bobby Conn and Monica BouBou, and be backed on a couple songs by Whitney, a new group anchored by former Smith Westerns members Max Kakacek and Julien Ehrlich. —Leor Galil
