Jodie Mack: Let Your Light Shine

School of the Art Institute alum Jodie Mack seems to engage in formal experimentation out of a spirit of playfulness and curiosity; her film and video works, when not laugh-out-loud funny, are rarely less than charming. Dusty Stacks of Mom: The Poster Project, the centerpiece of this shorts program, is a homemade epic shot entirely in and around the Florida storage locker where Mack's mother ran a mail-order poster company. The soundtrack is a goofy, song-by-song cover of Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon (with all the lyrics changed to consider the poster business), and the inventive, artisanal special effects recall some of Michel Gondry's from Be Kind Rewind. Like that film, Mack's work celebrates the process of making art as an end in itself; the sentiment is so strong it comes through even in the purely abstract pieces.
