John Brown's Body, Spiritual Rez Recommended Soundboard

When: Fri., Dec. 5, 9 p.m. 2008

Since the release of the 2005 full-length Pressure Points, Boston-based dub and reggae band John Brown’s Body, whose name honors the famed abolitionist (or “domestic terrorist,” depending on whose history you’re buying), has suffered some serious blows. Bassist Scott Palmer died of gallbladder cancer, a few other longtime members quit, and singer Elliot Martin underwent surgery for vocal polyps. The band is a very different creature now, its lineup dramatically overhauled, but it still sounds strong on its recent seventh album, Amplify (Easy Star)—the drumming is vigorous, the horns and Hammond B3 deftly deployed, the music vivid with a diversity of pop influences and affecting, engaging beats. Spiritual Rez opens. —Monica Kendrick
