Joint Attention The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Saturdays. Continues through Nov. 16 2013

Pat Curtis's new drama—premiering in an intimate, well-acted staging by Three Cat Productions—seeks to educate audiences about autism: differing ideas about how it's caused and how it can be treated, as well as its impact on the families it affects. When Dave and Claire learn their two-and-a-half-year-old son is autistic, their pain is intensified by their uncertainty about how to help him; Claire trusts her old-school pediatrician while Dave is drawn to new alternative theories he finds on the Internet. The conflict triggers obsessiveness in Dave and guilty withdrawal on Claire's part, endangering their marriage; the near-constant presence of an attractive young female therapist exacerbates the situation. Under Jason Paul Smith's direction, the cast bring emotional intensity to the instructive but rather stiff script. —Albert Williams
