Jon Member Picks The Short List (Theater) Recommended Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays and Mon., Nov. 3. Continues through Dec. 20 2008

Dude. I am so totally charmed. Based on a short story by George Saunders, published in the New Yorker in 2003, this peculiar but touching sci-fi romantic comedy is set in a future just two steps away from now, where focus groups have been literally institutionalized: demographic guinea pigs spend their lives in pleasant confinement, evaluating ad campaigns, sampling test products, and imbibing a mellow drug called Aurabon through a portal implanted in their necks. Things are going most excellently for teenage narrator Jon until he gets his girlfriend Carolyn pregnant and she decides it's time to live out in the real world. Adapted and directed by Seth Bockley, this Collaboraction production retains the story's aura of wise innocence, and the cast is tenth percentile. --Tony Adler
