Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Wednesdays-Sundays. Continues through May 10 2009

Even by Andrew Lloyd Webber's standards, this 1968-vintage musical is a lightweight. But at least it's a fun lightweight, almost completely free of the pomposity that sinks later Webber shows like The Phantom of the Opera and Sunset Boulevard. Webber and lyricist Tim Rice retell the Old Testament story of Joseph in a series of sprightly song parodies, ranging from country to light rock to tunes that wouldn't be out of place in a 1920s musical comedy. As performed by Marc Robin's ensemble of able triple-threats--led by Susan Moniz's Narrator and Max Quinlan's Joseph--the show is energetic, audience-pleasing, and blissfully free of deeper messages. It was all I could do to keep my eight-year-old daughter from leaping up and dancing in the aisle. --Jack Helbig
