Joust, Mama, Dumpster Babies Recommended Soundboard Image

When: Sun., Dec. 14, 7 p.m. 2014

This intercity outfit, based in Chicago and Minneapolis, is made up of former members of some of the midwest’s best punk-power-pop groups of the mid-aughts: the Retainers, Teenage Moods, and Empty Heads. As Joust, these guys crank out the same kind of hypermelodic, supertight, post-Reatard garage-punk bangers that made their past projects so fun. And the brand-new “Sprouting Seeds” single, released on the band’s own Fatal Seizure Records, has maximum replay value. The disc’s B side, “Ouroboros,” infuses the group’s irresistible sound with a hint of darkness and a heavy dose of Iron Maiden-biting guitarmonies that would be hilarious if they weren’t so damn catchy. The only problem with this seven-inch is that it clocks in at just under four minutes, which is too bad. Tonight is the release party. —Luca Cimarusti
