Joy! The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Wednesdays. Continues through Dec. 21 2011

Shameless cornballs Benjamin Kass and John Pantlind welcome audience members to their "Christmas cabin on Clark"—i.e., iO's Del Close Theater—for a show loosely resembling an old-fashioned TV holiday special. Songs about loving Christmas and banter about loving Christmas are interspersed with eggnog-flavored sketches and guest shots by iO regulars, including the adorably potty-mouthed puppets from Felt. But the songs are underrehearsed, the banter is aimless, and the sketches (the little drummer boy wakes up baby Jesus, a dad wants his teenage kids to believe in Santa) come off half-assed and one-note. By far the funniest thing at the show I saw was the one purely improvised scene—a father-son argument having nothing to do with Christmas. –Zac Thompson
