Junior Bonner

Unassuming on the surface (and eclipsed at the time of its 1972 release by the more commercially oriented The Getaway), this is nevertheless a major film from Sam Peckinpah, and—apart from The Wild Bunch—perhaps his most personal. Steve McQueen (mercifully minus Ali McGraw) stars as an aging rodeo cowboy who finds that going home ain't all it's cracked up to be. It's one of McQueen's best performances; Robert Preston and Ida Lupino contribute superb support. A film filled to overflowing with small, subtle beauties.
