To the editor:

Bob Mehr's story [The Meter, September 22] about the new business director at HotHouse missed an essential element about HotHouse and why the absence of Marguerite Horberg is such a loss to the Chicago cultural community. HotHouse is more than just a music venue, and it is more than just a business, which is how it is portrayed both in the article and in Martin Bishop's comments, all focused on big audiences and finances.

From the time she started up HotHouse one beer case at a time in the small venue on Milwaukee Avenue almost 20 years ago, which she grew into a thriving center downtown, Marguerite Horberg has made a unique contribution to the Chicago cultural community. She connected with all elements of our community--big and small. HotHouse became a truly diverse open forum that welcomed and nurtured many groups and cultural organizations as well as unknown international artists and brought them together with Chicago's wider community. HotHouse was a place to discover new ideas as well as enjoy performances.

Without that vision and community involvement, HotHouse is just another downtown music venue for those who can pay pricey tickets.

Marguerite Horberg is due a lot more than just the compensation owed by the current CIPEX board. We should all be grateful for her contribution to Chicago and hope she finds another way to use her talents in service of Chicago's cultural community.
