Just One Look

Director Riley Yip interweaves several narrative threads in this drama about two young friends coming of age in a small town near Hong Kong circa 1960. Together they chase girls and torture rats; one obsesses over Hong Kong action movies, which his kung fu master dismisses as “fake” even while patronizing them himself. Convinced that a local gangster is responsible for the death of his father, one of the young men seeks vengeance using a slingshot. While not particularly cohesive, this 2002 film has some nice moments of comedy and father-son poignancy. In Chinese with subtitles. 101 min.
