Justifying Gentrifying

Dear Reader:

In his letter printed in the August 2 Reader, Ken Smith praises gentrification and paints a cartoonish picture of low-income Chicagoans as violent lowlifes, apparently without a single exception. Anybody who has lived in low-income neighborhoods knows better.

Mr. Smith follows a familiar historical pattern: demonize the people you intend to mistreat, the better to justify your self-serving actions.
