Andrzej Wajda's 1957 film was the first to call world attention to the Polish cinema, though it hasn't aged gracefully. Its social theme and allegorical style now seem typical of the defensive tendencies of the 50s art film; it doesn't let you forget that it's “poetic.” An underground group retreats through Warsaw's sewers during the uprising of 1944, and most of the members come to grim ends. In Polish with subtitles.
