Alf Sjoberg is known in America mainly for his Strindberg film Miss Julie, though some European critics place him near the top of the Swedish cinema. This 1954 film, also based on a Strindberg piece (Eric XIV), is in three parts and three different styles, ranging from fairy-tale whimsy to stark expressionism in telling the story of a commoner queen's rise and fall. With Ulla Jacobsson, Ulf Palme, and Jarl Kulle; photographed by Sven Nykvist.
