Montreal death-metal band Kataklysm have been honing their vicious, chaotic sound for more than 20 years now—they hit their stride in the late 90s and haven't missed a step since. They're best known for a drumming style they call "northern hyperblast"—which they've had to teach to at least four drummers on the road, because its originator, Max Duhamel, has taken a few leaves of absence. In case you're just tuning in to the Kataklysm saga, their latest release is a great way to catch up. Iron Will: 20 Years Determined (Nuclear Blast) is a rich and detailed multidisc DVD-CD set that documents each phase of the band's career using lots of live footage, a documentary, and a collection of videos—and its staggering new title track suggests that the band's next album will be a natural step forward from 2010's Heaven's Venom. —Monica Kendrick Origin, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Vital Remains, and Rose Funeral open.
