Ken Barnard The Short List (Theater) Recommended Critics' Picks Brief Run (Theater)

When: Feb. 19-20 2010

Ken Barnard deals in unsettling character work, left-field concepts, and butterfly costumes. Over the years, the highlights of his Andy Kaufman-esque "performance comedy" have included a dramatic reading from Rocky III, a hand-gesture-enhanced rendition of "Colors of the Wind" from Disney's Pocahontas, and his portrayal of Nicky Mouse, Mickey's surly, sad alcoholic cousin. Clearly Barnard has never aspired merely to craft a witty one-liner, and his grand ambitions are beginning to pay off. His work now strikes a compelling balance between absurdist personal revelations ("I called my girlfriend the wrong name during sex. . . . She’s Debra, and I said Zebra") and prop/costume/character weirdness--all delivered with precise timing, plenty of adlibs, and an affable grin. --Steve Heisler
