What makes Portland trio Mean Jeans tick? At least three things: slime, partying, and outer space. These bubblegum garage punks are shamelessly goofy but play together with the kind of telepathic brain bond that makes goofy sound sharp—they share some DNA with Boris the Sprinkler, who were excellent at dressing up astute pop-punk in polka dots, feather boas, and antlers. Mean Jeans seem to like to cut loose more than those Green Bay nerds, though: they have songs called “2 Much Cocaine” (on 2009’s Are You Serious?) and “Don’t Stop Partying” (on 2012’s On Mars) and lyrics that mention “Coors Light speed” and “Tidal waves of Velveeta cheese” (from the tune “I Miss Outer Space”). Plus their video for “Possessed 2 Party (With U)” parodies Raiders of the Lost Ark with an archaeological hunt for old cans of Sparks from before the manufacturer had to take out the caffeine. Front man and guitarist Billy Jeans and his band are always fun (and wittier than they seem on the surface), and in a little more than five years they’ve accumulated a fervent cult following that appreciates a deep-cut Point Break quote and a good slice of pizza chased with a shot of Jagermeister. —Kevin Warwick
